The Text

He’s walking through an airport terminal in the early morning, carry-on rolling behind him, AirPods in. The light is soft - that quiet hour before the crowds arrive. He pulls out his phone and types without thinking. It’s muscle memory at this point.

“Landed safe. Love you.”

Different city. Different hotel. He’s standing at the window of a room in Budapest, loosening his tie. The Danube stretches out below, the Chain Bridge lit up against the night sky. He glances at his phone, thumbs a quick message.

“Checked in. Long day tomorrow.”

He’s at a train station now, overnight bag on his shoulder, watching the departure board flip. City lights blur through the glass behind him. He’s done this a hundred times - the platforms, the schedules, the quiet moments between somewhere and somewhere else.

She never asks him to text. He just always does.

But somewhere between Budapest and home, he started thinking - what if one day he can’t? Not the text. The everything after. The insurance details she’d need. The accounts. The passwords. Who to call. She shouldn’t have to figure all of that out alone, in the worst moment of her life.

So he put it all in one place. Every account, every policy, every contact - locked in an encrypted vault that only goes to her if he ever doesn’t check in. She doesn’t even know what’s in it. She just knows it’s there.

His phone buzzes. He glances at the screen - a text from her: “Get home safe ❤️”

He smiles. Picks up his bag and heads down the platform to catch his train.

He still sends the text. Every time. But now she’s covered either way.
